If you’ve been following Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps, you’ve already done the hardest part: you decided to take control of your money. Maybe you’ve got a starter emergency fund tucked away, a list of debts you’re determined to knock out, and a new habit of telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.

That’s real progress, and you don’t have to start over. Keep the habits that are working for you. Triggator is here to build on them, using a framework we call the Triggator Triangle: Budget, Save, and Pay Off Debt, all working together, one paycheck at a time.

Bring What’s Already Working

Whatever plan got you started, some of the best money habits are universal, and they all have a home in Triggator:

  • A written plan for your money. In Triggator, that’s your Spending Plan.
  • Cash set aside for emergencies. That becomes your Emergency Fund, part of your Peace of Mind Fund.
  • Focus and intensity on debt. That’s what the Payoff Accelerator is built for.
  • Living on less than you make. That’s the whole point of giving every dollar a job.

Now let’s look at how each side of the Triangle takes those habits further.

Side 1: Budget — A Spending Plan Built Around Your Paycheck

Most budgeting apps think in calendar months. Real life doesn’t. Your money arrives one paycheck at a time, so that’s how Triggator plans it.

When you set up Triggator, you’ll add each income: give it a name, choose the category, enter the amount, and tell Triggator how often you’re paid (weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly) and on which day.

Adding an income in Triggator: name, category, amount, frequency and pay day

Triggator then builds a Spending Plan for every pay period and matches your bills to the paycheck that will cover them. If your household has more than one income, like a second job, a side gig or a spouse who also works, that’s no problem. Each income gets its own plan for each pay period, and you decide which bills it pays.

And because a plan only works if you stick with it, Triggator encourages you to build some joy into your Spending Plan too. A little fun money isn’t a failure; it’s what keeps you going.

Side 2: Save — Your Peace of Mind Fund

An emergency fund is one of the smartest moves you can make, and Triggator helps you take that idea further with a Peace of Mind Fund made of three parts that work together:

  • Emergency Fund: your first line of defense when life throws you a curveball.
  • Alligator Fund™: for the predictable-but-sneaky expenses that don’t happen every month.
  • Savings Goals: for the things you’re actually working toward.

Watch Out for Alligator Expenses™

One of the best things we ever did with our own Spending Plan was start saving for the expenses that only come around once or twice a year: birthdays, holidays, car maintenance, insurance premiums (here’s a great list of expenses that are easy to forget). They have a way of sneaking up and biting you right in the wallet, which is why we call them Alligator Expenses.

In Triggator, you choose the Alligator Expenses you want to plan for, decide how much you’ll need and by when, and pick which paycheck to save from. Triggator works out how much to set aside from each paycheck and adds it to your Spending Plan, so when the expense shows up, the money is already waiting.

The same goes for every savings goal. Triggator breaks each one into bite-sized amounts per paycheck, and you can track your progress as it grows.

Side 3: Pay Off Debt — The Payoff Accelerator

Minimum payments can keep you in debt for years. Triggator builds you a real payoff strategy and shows you the actual date you’ll make your last payment, plus how much sooner you’ll get there when you put extra money toward it.

You choose the method that fits the way you think:

  • Snowball: smallest balance first, for quick wins and momentum.
  • Avalanche: highest interest rate first, to pay the least interest overall.
  • Custom: have a debt you just can’t stand? Attack it first.

Already working the snowball? Keep right on going. Triggator will build it straight into your Spending Plan. Here’s how to set it up:

1. Open your Debt Plan. From the App menu, choose Debt Plan.

2. Go to the Debt Analysis tab. Your Debt Plan opens on Debt Progress; click Debt Analysis next to it.

3. Choose your strategy and enter the extra amount you can put toward debt each month (your snowball payment).

4. Preview your plan. Before you commit, Triggator shows your monthly payment, your time to debt-free, how much interest you’ll save, and the projected payoff date for every debt. Curious how the methods compare? Preview them side by side:

5. Click “Make It So.” Triggator adds your payoff payments to your Spending Plan, starting with the first debt you’re going to tackle.

6. Watch your progress. Back on the Debt Progress tab, you can see how much you’ve paid off and how much is left, every step of the way.

Tip: if you’d rather treat your mortgage as a regular monthly bill instead of part of your payoff plan, simply enter it as a monthly expense in your Spending Plan.

Why Three Sides Work Better Together

Budgeting, saving and paying off debt aren’t separate projects; they lean on each other. A Spending Plan with no savings can be knocked over by the first surprise expense. Saving without a debt plan can leave interest quietly piling up. That’s why Triggator routes every paycheck through all three sides of the Triangle, so each one supports the others and your progress keeps moving.
